
4.8-Magnitude Leongatha Quake Shakes Melbourne, Followed by Aftershock
Geoscience Australia detected a preliminary 4.8-magnitude earthquake at 2:01am Saturday near Leongatha, 130km south-east of Melbourne. Shaking from about 10km underground reached Melbourne's eastern suburbs and drew thousands of felt reports. No tsunami threat. A 3.1 aftershock (smaller follow-on quake) followed 55 minutes later. South Gippsland is among Australia's most active seismic zones.
