
4.8-Magnitude Quake Hits Near Leongatha, Felt in Melbourne
Geoscience Australia detected a preliminary magnitude 4.8 earthquake at 2:01am Saturday near Leongatha, 130km south-east of Melbourne. Tremors reached Melbourne's eastern suburbs, generating thousands of felt reports. The quake struck about 10km deep, with no tsunami threat. A 3.1 aftershock followed 55 minutes later. South Gippsland is among Australia's most active seismic zones.
