Ottawa unveils voluntary data-centre guidelines backed by major tech firms

Federal AI Minister Evan Solomon released five voluntary principles for data-centre development in Markham, Ont. Developers must limit environmental impact, disclose local effects, avoid shifting electricity costs to Canadians, deliver lasting local benefits and add strategic value. Over 20 companies signed on, including OpenAI, Anthropic, Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta.
