Ottawa sets voluntary rules for data centres, backed by major tech companies

Federal AI Minister Evan Solomon released five voluntary principles for data centres — large facilities that store and process digital information — in Markham, Ont. Developers must limit environmental harm, be transparent about local effects, avoid raising Canadians' electricity bills, and provide lasting local and national benefits. Over 20 companies signed on, including OpenAI, Amazon, Microsoft, Google and Meta.
