Prime Minister rules out united Ireland border poll this parliament

Prime Minister Andy Burnham has ruled out a border poll on Irish unity this parliament, the BBC reported on 27 August 2026. The stance sharpens Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant's July remark that a poll was "not top of my priorities." Sinn Féin has proposed a citizens' assembly to advance constitutional planning outside the legislative process.
