Queensland tabled legislation on 27 August 2026 conceding its "breach bail, go to jail" law violates rights to liberty, children's protections, and humane detention. The law imposes minimum 12-month sentences on children as young as 10 who reoffend while on bail. The government itself warns it will worsen overcrowding. Proceeding requires overriding the Human Rights Act — a step reserved for exceptional circumstances.
