Queensland Says Its Tough Youth Crime Law Breaks Human Rights

On 27 August 2026, Queensland admitted its "breach bail, go to jail" law breaks human rights — including liberty, children's protections, and humane treatment in detention. The law forces at least 12 months in jail for children as young as 10 who break the rules of their early release. The government warns jails will get more crowded. A special override of human-rights law is needed to keep it.
