Kurdish-Led SDF Merges into Syrian Military, Ending Autonomous Rule in Northeast

SDF commander Mazloum Abdi announced on 25 August 2026 that the Kurdish-led, U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces have merged with Syria's military and will no longer operate independently. The deal with Damascus followed months of talks throughout 2025. The SDF had controlled Syria's oil-rich northeast.
