Syrian Democratic Forces Dissolve After Merger with Syrian Military

SDF commander-in-chief Mazloum Abdi announced on 25 August 2026 that the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces have completed their merger with the Syrian military and will cease to operate as an independent force under an agreement with Damascus. The U.S.-backed SDF controlled much of Syria's oil-rich northeast. The dissolution follows months of talks throughout 2025.
