Trump's asylum orders may undermine Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, lawyers say

The Supreme Court of Canada upheld the Safe Third Country Agreement in 2023, citing U.S. procedural safeguards for asylum seekers. Trump's executive orders since January 2025 have dismantled those safeguards — closing the southern border, freezing refugee claims, and planning to revoke 200,000 asylum visas.
