Trump's asylum measures could unravel Canada-U.S. Safe Third Country Agreement, legal experts warn

The Supreme Court of Canada upheld the Safe Third Country Agreement in 2023, citing U.S. procedural safeguards that protected asylum seekers from rights violations. Trump executive orders since January 2025 have dismantled those safeguards — closing the southern border, freezing refugee adjudications, and now planning to revoke 200,000 asylum seekers' visas. Immigration lawyer Maureen Silcoff says Canada should consider pausing or cancelling the pact.
