Government unveils under-16 social media ban, but needs Labour's votes to pass

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Education Minister Erica Stanford announced a ban on social media for under-16s from Wellington on 24 August 2026. The bill had been on hold since May. ACT and NZ First oppose it, leaving the coalition short of a majority. Labour has not yet stated a position.
