Government wants to ban social media for under-16s, but can't pass it alone

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Education Minister Erica Stanford want to ban social media for under-16s, they announced from Wellington on 24 August 2026. The plan has waited since May. Two government partners, ACT and NZ First, oppose it, so Labour's votes are needed. Labour hasn't said yes or no yet.
