H5N1 Bird Flu Reaches Australian Mainland Mammals

A long-nosed fur seal found dead at Beachport, South Australia, died from H5N1 bird flu — the first confirmed mammal case on the Australian mainland. Australia became the last continent to record the virus in June 2026. In South America, the same mammal crossover preceded devastating pinniped colony die-offs. The endangered Australian sea lion faces very high risk.
