Bird Flu Found in an Australian Mammal for the First Time

A type of bird flu called H5N1 killed a long-nosed fur seal found dead at Beachport, South Australia — the first such case in a mammal on the Australian mainland. Australia was the last continent to record the virus, in June 2026. In South America, the same virus wiped out seal colonies. The endangered Australian sea lion now faces very high risk.
