Over 1,000 Terns Dead on South Australian Islands in Largest H5 Bird Flu Die-Off Since Mainland Arrival

More than 1,000 greater crested terns have been found dead across Troubridge Island and the Pages Islands, all confirmed H5-positive sites. Premier Malinauskas called it a "significant escalation." The events are the largest mass die-offs since H5 bird flu reached Australia's mainland in June. Endangered sea lion colonies share these breeding islands; no mammal deaths have been detected.
