U.S. Sanctions ICC President Akane, Escalating Pressure on the Court

The U.S. Treasury sanctioned ICC President Tomoko Akane and a senior trial lawyer in August 2026. Akane is the highest-level official targeted since a February 2025 executive order expanded pressure on the Court, hitting judges and deputy prosecutors along the way. Neither the U.S. nor Israel belongs to the Rome Statute, the treaty that established the ICC.
