
U.S. Sanctions ICC President Akane in Highest-Level Targeting Yet of the Court
The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions on International Criminal Court President Tomoko Akane and a senior ICC trial lawyer in August 2026. Akane is the highest-level target in a campaign that began with a February 2025 executive order and has since hit ICC judges and deputy prosecutors. Neither the U.S. nor Israel is party to the Rome Statute underpinning the Court.
