DRC Ebola outbreak now deadliest in country's history, approaching 2014–16 west Africa record

Ebola has killed at least 2,325 people across 4,945 confirmed cases in the Democratic Republic of Congo, government data from 17 August 2026 shows — the deadliest outbreak in the country's history. The WHO says it may surpass the 2014–16 west Africa epidemic (28,616 cases, 11,310 deaths) as the largest ever. The UN warns Ebola "is winning."
