DRC Ebola outbreak becomes deadliest in country's history, on track to exceed 2014–16 west Africa epidemic

The DRC Ebola outbreak has killed at least 2,325 people across 4,945 confirmed cases, surpassing every prior Congolese outbreak, according to government data reported on 17 August 2026. The WHO says it is on track to exceed the 2014–16 west Africa epidemic (28,616 cases, 11,310 deaths) as the largest ever recorded. The UN warns Ebola "is winning."
