South Korea Proposes Formal End-of-War Talks with North Korea

At an August 15, 2026 ceremony, President Lee Jae Myung proposed talks with North Korea to formally end the Korean War, which an armistice — not a peace treaty — paused in 1953. Pyongyang has not responded. Lee also suggested a layered security system along the DMZ and offered to discuss halting North Korea's nuclear program.
