South Korean President Proposes Formal End-of-War Talks with North Korea
At a Liberation Day ceremony on August 15, 2026, President Lee Jae Myung formally proposed talks with North Korea to officially end the Korean War, which has remained technically active since an armistice froze hostilities in 1953. Pyongyang has not yet responded. Lee also suggested a "multi-layered security system" to prevent flare-ups along the DMZ and offered to discuss halting North Korea's nuclear ambitions.
