WHO: DRC Ebola Outbreak May Exceed 2014 West Africa Toll

WHO warned on 12 August 2026 that DRC's Ebola outbreak could surpass the 2014–2016 West Africa epidemic, which killed over 11,000. Driven by the Bundibugyo strain — which has no approved vaccine — eastern Congo has recorded 2,000-plus deaths from 4,300 cases. WHO officials said community access will decide whether the toll eclipses that benchmark.
