WHO Warns DRC Ebola Outbreak Could Become Deadliest on Record

WHO warned on 12 August 2026 that the DRC Ebola outbreak, driven by the unvaccinable Bundibugyo strain, is on track to eclipse the 2014-2016 West Africa epidemic that killed over 11,000. Eastern Congo has already recorded more than 2,000 deaths from 4,300-plus cases. WHO officials said improved community access will determine whether the toll surpasses that benchmark.
