Second Midwest Family Killing in Two Weeks Pushes 2026 US Mass Murder Count to 15

On August 12, 2026, a registered sex offender in Winfield, Kansas shot and killed his four children—ages 3 to 9—and their mother before taking his own life. It was the second Midwest familicide (the killing of one's own family) in two weeks, after a July 28 Michigan case. The Gun Violence Archive counts 15 US mass murders in 2026; at least nine were family annihilation events.
