Met Police to Install Permanent Facial Recognition on Oxford Street

London's Metropolitan Police plan fixed facial recognition cameras on Oxford Street and the West End, embedded in lamp-posts. The cameras would continuously scan passersby against a watchlist of wanted suspects — a shift from earlier mobile van-based trials. The rollout coincides with Oxford Street's pedestrianisation. Civil liberties groups Liberty and Big Brother Watch are mobilising opposition.
