Luxon survives second leadership challenge, sacks Defence Minister Penk

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon survived a confidence vote at an emergency National Party caucus meeting on 12 August 2026 — his second leadership challenge this year. Luxon said Chris Penk launched the challenge, stripped him of all ministerial portfolios and called his position untenable. Penk later confirmed he will not seek re-election in November.
