Luxon survives challenge to his leadership, sacks Defence Minister

National Party MPs voted to keep Christopher Luxon as leader on 12 August 2026 — his second challenge this year. Luxon blamed Defence Minister Chris Penk for the challenge and removed him from all government roles. Penk later said he would not stand for Parliament again in November's election.
