Government borrowing fell sharply in June as debt costs eased

The Office for National Statistics said the government borrowed £16 billion in June, down a third on last year and below forecasts. The fall came from lower interest payments linked to inflation and higher tax income, not spending cuts. Total debt remains at 94.9% of GDP — the size of the economy.
