NSW to spend $47 million to reopen empty Sydney jail

NSW will spend $47.1 million to reopen a closed 515-bed jail, the Dawn de Loas centre at Silverwater, in early 2027, announced 28 September 2026. Together with extra beds being added quickly at Parklea, the government says space for prisoners would rise by nearly 1,000. Premier Chris Minns said it was needed to keep the public safe.
