NSW announces $47.1m to reopen 515-bed Silverwater prison

NSW government announced on 28 September 2026 it will spend $47.1 million to recommission the 515-bed Dawn de Loas centre at Silverwater, planned to reopen in early 2027. With fast-tracked beds at Parklea, the government said capacity would rise by nearly 1,000. Premier Chris Minns called it necessary to keep the public safe.
