Major Pacific Island Nations' Summit Opens Without Key Leaders

Four leaders skipped the Pacific Islands Forum, a regional cooperation group, when it opened in Palau on 30 August. Solomon Islands' PM Wale, who chairs the Forum, faces a no-confidence vote — meaning lawmakers may try to remove him. Fiji's Rabuka and Vanuatu's Napat also withdrew. Analyst Oliver Nobetau said the no-shows may signal nations prioritising one-on-one deals over group commitments. The summit ends 4 September.
