Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting Opens in Palau Without Key Leaders

The 55th Pacific Islands Forum Leaders Meeting opened in Koror, Palau, on 30 August without the leaders of Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Samoa. Solomon Islands PM Matthew Wale, the Forum's chair, faces a no-confidence motion. Fiji's PM Rabuka and Vanuatu's PM Napat also withdrew. Lowy Institute analyst Oliver Nobetau said the absences "dulls the flame" of the summit and could signal nations prioritising bilateral deals over regional commitments. The meeting runs through 4 September.
