Ottawa backs off planned taxes on U.S. fish after Atlantic Canada raises concerns

Canada dropped U.S. fish and seafood from new tariffs planned for Sept. 8 — just one day after announcing them. (Tariffs are taxes on imported goods, used to pressure another country.) Two federal sources said the change followed warnings the taxes would hurt Atlantic Canada's fish-processing plants. In fall, nearly half of Maine's lobster catch is processed in New Brunswick. Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson said the change protects Canada's coastal economy.
