China jails artist for sculptures made before the law banning them existed

A Chinese court sentenced 70-year-old US permanent resident Gao Zhen to three years after a secret one-day trial. He was convicted for sculptures mocking Mao Zedong, made around 2010, under a 2018 law that punishes disrespecting China's historical leaders. The UN said punishing someone under a law that didn't exist when they acted is unfair.
