China jails artist for Mao-satirizing sculptures made years before the law existed

A Chinese court sentenced 70-year-old US permanent resident Gao Zhen to three years — the maximum — after a secret one-day trial at Sanhe city people's court in Hebei. He was convicted under China's heroes and martyrs law, in force since March 2018, for Mao-satirizing sculptures created around 2010. The UN human rights office flagged the case as a retroactive application of criminal law.
