More students borrowing as jobs get harder to find

A government report to Tertiary Education Minister Penny Simmonds says 126,696 people took out student loans worth $1.145 billion in the first three months of 2026. That's 12% more borrowers and 19% more money than the same period in 2025. The report says fewer available jobs is driving the increase.
