Student loan borrowing jumps 19% as labour market slows

An Education Ministry report to Tertiary Education Minister Penny Simmonds says 126,696 people borrowed $1.145 billion from the student loan scheme in the first three months of 2026 — up 12% in borrower numbers and 19% in dollar terms on the same period in 2025. The report attributes the rise to the slowing labour market.
