Luxon promises no new taxes, dropping ideas he raised two weeks ago

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has promised "no new taxes" if National is re-elected in November 2026. The pledge scraps a bed tax and a bank tax Luxon himself suggested two weeks earlier. Auckland's mayor, Wayne Brown, said dropping the bed tax meant walking away from a deal signed with Auckland in April 2025.
