Government thought about scrapping carbon-selling auctions after prices crashed

The Government sets a price on carbon pollution by selling permits at auction. After Climate Change Minister Simon Watts cut the link to global climate pledges, the permit price fell from about $50 to $33, and the last auction of the year sold nothing. Officials considered pausing auctions to make permits scarce and lift prices. By April, no one backed the idea, so auctions stayed the same.
