Government considered cancelling carbon auctions to fix price crash it caused

After Climate Change Minister Simon Watts announced plans to "uncouple" the ETS from international climate pledges, carbon prices fell from about $50 to $33 and the year's final auction sold nothing. Officials then weighed cancelling auctions for one to two years to create scarcity and lift prices. By April, officials and market participants did not support the approach, and ministers kept auctions largely unchanged.
