Three family members die while swimming off West Sussex coast

A couple and their teenage daughter died after getting into trouble while swimming in the sea at Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, on August 18, 2026. A younger girl from the same family is in hospital in critical condition. Sussex Police's Chief Superintendent James Collis confirmed all four were swimming together before the difficulty began. Emergency services were called at 2:40pm.
