Padres Coach Detained by Immigration Authorities; Family and Government Disagree on His Legal Status
U.S. immigration officers detained Oswaldo Pirela, a 34-year-old Venezuelan and Padres coach, at El Paso's airport on August 16. The government says he entered the country illegally in 2014; his family says he has an active legal claim, a valid work permit, and is applying for a skilled-worker visa. He remains in custody while his case proceeds.
