Padres Coach Pirela Detained by ICE as DHS and Family Clash Over Legal Status

ICE detained Oswaldo Pirela, a 34-year-old Venezuelan and the Padres' minor-league catching coordinator, at El Paso's airport on August 16. DHS says he entered the U.S. illegally in 2014 and overstayed his authorization; his family says he holds a pending asylum claim, has continually renewed his work permit, and is pursuing an EB-2 visa. He remains in custody pending removal proceedings.
