Carney calls Trump ahead of steep new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods

Prime Minister Mark Carney called President Donald Trump late Monday, spokesperson Jane Deeks confirmed. Ottawa is trying to stop new 50-per-cent U.S. tariffs — essentially a heavy tax on imported goods — from hitting about US$20 billion worth of Canadian products. The tariffs take effect just after midnight Wednesday. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and negotiator Janice Charette remain in Washington.
