Carney calls Trump as 50% U.S. tariffs on $20B in Canadian goods loom

Prime Minister Mark Carney spoke with President Donald Trump by phone late Monday, communications director Jane Deeks confirmed, as Ottawa pressed to avert new 50-per-cent U.S. tariffs on roughly US$20 billion in Canadian goods. The levies, under Section 338 of the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, take effect at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc and negotiator Janice Charette remain in Washington.
