Border Officers Caught Misusing Government Surveillance Tools in Hundreds of Cases
Records obtained by Wired show that from 2009 to 2022, border officers misused government surveillance tools — tracking license plates, scanning faces, and pulling phone location data — to spy on romantic partners, family, coworkers, and suspected drug traffickers. Of roughly 300 incidents, 78 were referred for criminal investigation and 43 were never investigated.
