CBP Officers Misused Surveillance Databases in ~300 Incidents Over 13 Years

FOIA records obtained by Wired document roughly 300 incidents from 2009 to 2022 in which CBP officers misused government surveillance databases — license plate readers, facial recognition, smartphone location data — to spy on romantic interests, family members, coworkers, and suspected drug traffickers. Of the incidents, 78 went to criminal investigators and 43 were never investigated.
