Victoria Moves to Stop Child Deaths Before They Happen

Victoria's child protection agency began monitoring 140 organisations in 2024 after a troubling discovery: 35 children known to the system died by suicide within a year of their last contact, including six Aboriginal youth. Rather than only investigate problems after they occur, the agency now steps in early to prevent harm. New powers granted in July 2024 allow direct intervention in at-risk cases.
