Medieval's Most Famous Tapestry Leaves France for First Time in a Millennium
The 11th-century Bayeux Tapestry, an embroidered chronicle of the 1066 Norman Conquest, will travel to London's British Museum from September 2026 to June 2027. The loan marks the artifact's first departure from Normandy in nearly 1,000 years. The move aligns with closure of Bayeux's museum for major renovations. Transport will use a climate-controlled container via Channel Tunnel. Britain's Treasury provided an £800 million indemnity.
